What role does prayer and devotion play in the school day?

Each day begins and ends with prayer. Students pray Morning Prayer from the Reading of the Day. They begin the lunch break with the Angelus and Blessing before meal. To close the day, they pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Sacred Heart of Jesus faculty sign an Oath of Fidelity to the Magisterium of The Holy Roman Catholic Church.

Do the students receive the sacraments regularly?

SHJHS students attend morning Mass on Fridays of each week at St. Mary’s Parish. Once a week students may take advantage of the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Mass is celebrated frequently in the Chapel.

What is the relationship between Sacred Heart of Jesus High School and the Diocese of Memphis?

Sacred Heart of Jesus High School is a lay founded secondary school that operates within the Diocese of Memphis. It teaches a Catholic curriculum faithful to the magisterium of the Church under the authority of Bishop Steib. Sacred Heart of Jesus High School has attained approval from Bishop Steib to operate and be known as a Catholic school.

What is the School Status (Private, Independent, Diocesan)

Sacred Heart of Jesus High School is a private, independent Catholic high school that faithfully adheres to the teachings of the Catholic Church. SHJHS is legally and financially independent from the Catholic Diocese of Memphis, while at the same time adhere to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Memphis, J. Terry Steib S.V.D.,D.D., who is in allegiance with the Holy See and Pope Benedict XVI. While not a Diocesan school, Sacred Heart of Jesus High School “has been recognized” by the Diocese as a school that is faithful and is in keeping with the teachings of the Catholic Church. It typically takes 3-5 years for an independent school that teaches the Catholic faith to be fully endorsed by the Diocesan Bishop.
